ASMP Expands Presence & Programs

ASMP has a busy few months planned as the Society participates in several key industry conferences:

• WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) 2012, February 16-23, Las Vegas. ASMP is offering four seminars at the event. See WPPI Show Discounts below under Member Benefits.

• FotoFest 2012, Houston, March 16th-April 3rd. ASMP will present a workshop on March 25th.

• 2012 SPE (Society for Photographic Education) National Conference, San Francisco, March 22- 25. ASMP will have a booth and present four seminars.

• NABSHOW (National Association of Broadcasters), Las Vegas, April 14-19. ASMP is the only photography trade organization to be part of this event. ASMP will host a booth, provide discounted access for members, and deliver five seminars.

• Palm Springs Photo Festival, Palm Springs, April 1- 6. There are two ASMP seminars being offered and the ASMP National Board of Directors meeting will be held during the Festival. See PSPF Show Discounts below under Member Benefits.

• CEPIC Congress 2012 (Coordination of European Picture Agencies Stock, Press and Heritage), London, May 15-18. ASMP is organizing a day of programming and will host a global trade association industry meeting.

2012 Voting Begins

ASMP Election season is here and there are 11 candidates running for 5 available seats on the ASMP National Board of Directors. ASMP voting members can cast their online ballots through March 15th. Results will be announced March 16th. Find out more about the candidates and issues here. And, if you are a General or Life Member, plan to vote between February 15 and March 15. ASMP and The Picture Archive Council of America (PACA) have filed an amicus brief in the case of Prince et al. v. Cariou, in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. The brief urges the Second Circuit to uphold a New York federal judge’s decision that the fair-use exemption to copyright protection did not apply to Richard Prince’s use of Patrick Cariou’s images of Rastafarians in Jamaica in his artworks. The brief asserts that if the Second Circuit finds that the unauthorized use of copyrighted photographs for use in appropriation art is not an infringement, it will threaten the ability of their members to earn a living from their work and to continue creating and archiving new copyrighted works. In a historic ruling on Congress’s power to give authors and composers monopoly power over their creations, the Supreme Court has broadly upheld the national legislature’s authority to withdraw works from the public domain and put them back under a copyright shield. The 6-2 decision (with Justice Elena Kagan not taking part) came in the case of Golan, et al., v. Holder (docket 10-545), involving a wide-ranging constitutional challenge to a federal law passed in 1994 to implement global agreements worked out in trade negotiations — the so-called Uruguay Round Agreement. The challenge, however, failed on all points. ASMP participated in amicus curiae briefs in this case from the beginning. For a summary of the Supreme Court opinion, go here.

The Executive Board Meeting was held in Philadelphia February 4th & 5th. Executive Board Members participating in the meeting were: Jim Cavanaugh, Shawn Henry, Gaily Mooney, Blake Discher and Richard Kelly. Board Members *Kevin Lock, Jenna Close and Ed McDonald also attended.

The series of free webinars jointly produced by ASMP and Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to educate creators and users on copyright, licensing and monetization of content continues! The webinars have been popular with corporate buyers of visual materials, as well as photographers and other imaging professionals. The next webinars to be presented are: The Future of Licensing, February 29th, 1:00 - 2:30 pm Eastern and (re)Imagining the Future, March 14th, 1:00 - 2:30 pm Eastern. ASMP Executive Director Eugene Mopsik attended the annual Eddie Adams Board Meeting in New York. This coming year will be the 25th Anniversary of the Workshop. He also traveled to Washington DC for a Copyright Alliance general membership meeting at which the plans for the coming year were discussed.

Globe Photos May Be Looking for You

Globe Photos is in the process of returning original photos to photographers after editing and digitizing the files. They report that many of the letters they have sent to photographers have been returned due to bad address. Hope for a Healthy World

BD’s Hope for a Healthy World Photo Competition gives photographers the opportunity to win cash and other prizes while having their work seen by a panel of industry experts. Winners’ work appears at the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph, as well as on the website pdnonline.com. The photographs focus on the subject of global health and become part of a traveling gallery BD uses to raise awareness about urgent issues.
