President's Corner
Looking Forward to Fall & Winter
For many of you, the summer months represent a prolonged period of planned vacations. For myself, I look forward to a Fall vacation; a time when I usually head north, where the air is crisper and the leaves change earlier. When I return, I start planning and look forward optimistically toward a busy year-end.
I've just returned from my Fall trek to Acadia N.P. and Northern Maine, and I'm really looking forward to an inspiring and fun CT-ASMP Fall and Winter.
With much help from the rest of the Board, Program Chair Rich Freeda, has been busy planning and producing a great schedule of Programs and Events which can be found on the Events page of our website, http://www.ctasmp.org/.
Please remember that in order for our upcoming events and programs to be successful, we need your help and participation. If you can volunteer to help before, during and/or after a program, we can sometimes offer free admission.
Regarding regular programs, on October fifteenth, in Newington, we held our most recent Pixels and Pints Event, which was led by Carl Vernlund and Ken Wilder, and, as usual, I'm told that "a fine time was had by all". And, if you missed that one, the next P & P will be held in Westport on February 11th, 2010.
In November, with much help from Sean Kernan, we are very fortunate and excited to host an evening program at Yale with Jay Maisel. Jay will speak at Linsly-Chittenden Hall on November 12th at 7 pm, and as most of you should know, Jay Maisel is a world-class photographer whose name has become synonymous with light, gesture, and color.
From Jay's studio:
Since his professional career started in 1954, Jay Maisel's images have been used for advertising, editorial, and corporate communications worldwide. He is widely exhibited and has numerous prints in private, corporate and museum collections. His books include Light in America, On Assignment (Photographers at Work), Jay Maisel's New York, and his latest, A Tribute.
Jay has taught workshops since 1966 in Maine, NYC, Houston, Truckee, Aspen, Jamaica, Santa Fe, Italy, and British Columbia, and he has lectured all over the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In fact, he will host six, five-day workshops at his lower Manhattan studio alone this year.
His awards include the ASMP Lifetime Achievement award, ASMP Photographer of the Year, International Center of Photography's Infinity Award, and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame.
Jay is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He earned his B.F.A. at Yale University and is a 1952 graduate of The Cooper Union where he majored in painting. At the beginning of his career, he worked with Swiss painter and photographer Herbert Matter, best known for his pioneering work in creating photo montages, and Alexi Brodovitch, who pioneered the role of magazine art director in America at Harper's Bazaar.
We think that it'll be a great program, so register soon.
As a Grand Finale for 2010, we will host the 2010 version of the famous CT-ASMP Holiday Party on December 10th! More details will come, but please mark your calendars. If you've ever attended, you'll agree that it's a great way to relax, eat, drink, and just socialize with your fellow ASMP Members. In addition, we ask attendees to bring a toy for donation to the Toy Closet Charity in New Haven, and the response has always been fantastic. It's not only fun, it's good Karma!
Looking forward to January, on the 14th, Rich Freeda and Gale Zucker have booked an event with Louisa Curtis, a photography consultant from Chatterbox Enterprises. More information about Louisa can be found at www.chatterboxenterprises.com.
This should be an informative & helpful program for all.
As with all of our Events, as we get closer, more detailed information can be found under the Events Section at www.ctasmp.org, and we're working hard to come up with others, so keep checking back to the website.
More good news:
So far this year, our Chapter has seen a growth in Membership. We have added 7 new Members, which is a 6% increase from one year ago, and our Membership now stands at 109!
Before closing, I would like to send a big "thank you" to my fellow members of the Board of CT-ASMP: Jim Fiora, Gale Zucker, Rich Freeda, Ken Wilder, Todd Atkinson, Ron Glassman, Maureen Edwards, Bob Handelman, Chris Beauchamp & Carl Vernlund. Without their hard work there would be no CT-ASMP.
If you would like to learn more about becoming a Board Member or a volunteer at an upcoming Program or Event, please contact me at info@ctasmp.org.
I look forward to seeing you soon!
